Canadian Working Holiday Insurance

Canada has opened its doors to embrace the idea of individuals traveling, working and living abroad. The Canadian Working Holiday Program has been gaining popularity as countries are sending individuals between 18 and 35 on an exchange program to a foreign country. Currently, there are several countries involved in this exchange agreement including:

As part of the requirements, the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada requires that individuals must have insurance coverage for their entire stay in Canada. Participants will be required to present proof of insurance when they initially enter Canada to the Port of Entry Officer. The requirements for the Canadian Working Holiday program specify that the insurance must cover health care, hospitalization and repatriation as well as indicate Canada as the host country.

Hi ,
My daughter, aged 20 is going on working holiday in Canada IEC programme. She has a two year visa to be activated by June this year. She is at uni now so is planning on going just for 2-3 months this summer and again next summer. Bunac have said she must have two years worth of insurance when entering Canada, what do you recommend?

Hi, I will be travelling to Alberta under a working holiday visa. I wanted to know if travel insurance is the same thing as health care insurance?

Thank you for your email. There can be a difference in what companies call “health insurance” and “travel insurance”. Typically health insurance will be a plan designed to cover you for your medical needs when in that country. For example, doctors visits, hospitalization, medications, etc… Travel insurance tends to have a component of health insurance, so you will be covered for doctors visits, hospitalizations, etc.. but you will also see more travel related benefits such as trip interruption, lost baggage, emergency evacuation and so on. The best thing is to review both plans to make sure it covers the benefits you need – you can learn more about different types of insurance plans on our insurance explained section of our website too:

Hi there, I am going to Canada from the UK on a working holiday visa under the IEC programme. I am planning to stay for a year (definitely no more) and am planning to work various jobs and am not 100% sure where in Canada I’ll be for different parts of my stay. I am starting in Alberta. Do you have any advice for which insurance I will need? Thanks.
