Making sense of insurance lingo.....
Welcome to the InternationalStudentInsurance.com useful terms section, where we explain what all the terms and words means that are used in our site. If something is not covered, or you are still unsure, then simply call or email us for more information - we are happy to assist you!
Deductible

A deductible is a payment that you have to make before the insurance will start. Our plans we offer come with either a "per injury/ illness" deductible or a "one time" deductible.

If you are from the UK or Europe, this is called an "Excess"

To give you an example of how it works, if you are receiving treatment and your doctors bill comes to $400 (for this case we are assuming your policy has a $100 deductible) you would need to pay the first $100 of medical expenses. Then of the remaining $300 the insurnace will kick in.

Coinsurance

Coinsurance is only applicable if you are using your policy in the USA and Canada. For any treatment received in the USA the insurance will pay 80% up to $5,000 and then 100% over that to your policy maximum, after you have met your deductible.

If you are receiving treatment outside the USA and Canada, 100% is covered by the insurance after the deductible is met

Premium

A premium is the initial payment you need to make in order to be insured by one of our insurance plans.

URC or Usual, Reasonable and Customary

When we state that a benefit is usual, reasonably and customary, this is based on what is usual and customary for that situation.

To give you an example, if you have a simply cold it may be necessary to do a few tests, but it would not be usual and reasonably to order a CAT scan, or hospitalize you (unless it was medically necessary).

So when a benefit states it is URC, you are covered for what is usual, reasonably and customary for that situation.

Beneficiary

The person who will recieve payment in the event of the insured's death. Usually you would nominate a family member or partner to be your beneficiary

Emergency Evacuation

This is the process of evacuating you to the nearest hospital in the event of an emergency. Based on the severity of the case, this could be by air ambulance or other transport means.

Repatriation

This is the process of bringing the remains of the insured back to their home country in the event of death.

Rider

Riders can be added to some of our policies which allow coverage for benefits that would otherwise be excluded. They cost an additional premium to have these riders, and can be for such things as hazardous sports, terrorism, etc...

Certificate Period

Your certificate period is your length of coverage. For each applicant you have the option of choosing your coverage period depending on the type of policy you select, so your certificate period wil vary based on this.
