Beyond Culture Shock — When to Seek Help

If you feel that you aren't getting any better after several weeks, or that your physical and emotional well being has continued to decline, then you may need additional help. Ask yourself, is my condition interfering with my ability to study or interact with others? If so, then you may consider getting help.

There are many reasons you may not be getting better, and it may be out of your hands. Here are some warning signs that may indicate that you need help:

  • You notice, or your friends tell you, that your personality has changed
  • You are quick to anger
  • You have thoughts of suicide
  • You have a change in appetite or weight
  • You are unable to sleep
  • You are consuming alcohol or drugs in excessive amounts
  • You have thoughts of suicide or homicide
  • You have thoughts of emptiness, hopelessness or worthlessness
  • You see or hear things that no one else does
  • You are paranoid

If you notice any of these symptoms in yourself, it's time to seek help. Moving to a new country is a big change, and sometimes you may need some help dealing with your emotions.
