Austria Visa Insurance Requirements

Insurance requirements for the Austrian student visas

Austria is one of the 26 Schengen countries in Europe allowing for a wide variety of access for travelers. The insurance requirements for Austria can be distinct based on your home country and your planned length of stay. As one of the 26 Schengen countries Austria insurance for international students for EU/EEA & Swiss nationals has a different process than for nations from other countries. The following breaks down the Austria visa insurance requirements for different student circumstances:

EU/EEA & Swiss Students

  • No visa required for entry
  • If your stay will exceed a 3 month period you are required to submit a confirmation of registration (Anmeldebescheinigung), where you will have to show proof of health insurance.
  • You are eligible to receive state-provided health care if you hold an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Regardless of if you plan to stay in Austria up to 3 months or more it is important to have an EHIC card. Each country has its distinct application process to receive this card so be sure to look into this with plenty of time before your departure. This is a free card which allows EU/EEA and Swiss Nationals to have temporary state-provided medical coverage in qualifying countries. As an owner of this card Austria insurance for international students is simplified due to the fact that you are not only satisfying the insurance requirements for Austria, but also ensuring that you will receive medical care as if you were an Austrian citizen. Keep in mind, however, that the costs of medical services may still differ your home country so be sure to make it a priority to go to medical centers that are under Austria’s regional health insurance offices (Gebietskrankenkasse) where most services are free.
