Austria is also a fantastic destination for students interested in studying German. Schools in Austria offer language-based and language-intensive programs, and being immersed in Austrian culture is a wonderful way for students to further their German language skills.

As an international student who is planning to study or visit Austria, you will need to make sure you have the appropriate level of health insurance coverage to cover you during your time there. For most students - you will have to purchase health insurance coverage, but in some circumstances you may be covered by reciprocal agreements with your home country.

The Austria visa insurance requirements are as follows:

  • EU/ EEA Countries or Switzerland - As long as you have a valid European Health Insurance Card you will be able to be covered through the healthcare system in Austria, just like in your home country
  • Non-EU/ EEA Students - for all other students you will need to show proof of health insurance as part of your residency permit application. This will require a letter from your insurance company stating you have coverage for your time there.

Although students from the EU with a valid European Health Insurance Card are not required to purchase insurance for their residency application, it is highly recommend to still purchase an insurance to cover you for benefits such as repatriation, evacuation, and more.
