Greece has a history of excellence in higher education dating back to ancient times, and it is still an extremely popular study destination for international students. Why should you consider studying abroad in Greece?
The Greek higher education system is fully governed by the state. It consists of two sectors: the university sector, and the technological sector, which includes Higher Technological Education Institutions (TEI). All of the Higher Tertiary state-accredited universities in Greece are public.
International students who are citizens of EU/EEA member countries are exempt from paying tuition fees at public universities and colleges in Greece, while international students from non-EU/EEA countries will only have to pay a small fee. International students from non-EU/EEA countries can expect to pay around €1500 in tuition fees per year.
Greece is a wonderful study destination for international students who are interested in history, archaeology, or the classics. While studying in Greece, you will experience amazingly well-preserved monuments and artifacts from one of the birthplaces of today’s western civilization.
The health care system in Greece has been ranked as one of the best in the world. Hospitals located in metropolitan areas are excellent, with great resources and highly trained staffs. Emergency care is provided for everyone, regardless of nationality.
If you are an EU citizen, you will be covered for most medical care by your European Health Insurance Card. This card is free and provides medically necessary, state-provided care in any of the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. It does not cover non-emergencies or emergency repatriation home, so even if you are an EY citizen, you might consider purchasing private insurance before your trip.
If you are an international student from a non-EU country, your country might have a reciprocal agreement for free medical care with Greece. Before your departure, check to see if this is the case. If it is not, you will need to purchase private health insurance before your trip. Make sure to purchase a health insurance policy that will cover you in the worst possible scenario, such as if you need to be transported back home unexpectedly.
