International Student Health Insurance for France

All international students studying in France are required to be covered by health insurance, either public or private. Many international students are eligible to take part in France’s universal health care coverage, though this depends on factors such as age, country of origin, and the length of your degree program. In order to be eligible for France’s national health insurance plan, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Under the age of 28 by October 1st of the current University year
  • Enrolled on a degree program for a period of 4 months or longer
  • Have a home country that is outside of the European Union or Switzerland

If you do not meet these provisions, you must purchase private health insurance.

We offer three primary international student insurance plans for both students and travelers who will be studying in or visiting France. All three offer comprehensive coverage at hospitals, doctors and providers throughout France, and can be purchased online with instant confirmation, and a visa letter will be automatically generated to submit with your visa application. Each of these plans meets and exceeds the appropriate visa requirements and will be accepted by French Consulates around the world.

The right international student insurance plan for you is dictated by how long you will be studying in France, if you will need a visa (and if so, what insurance requirements you you need to meet), whether you will be eligible for the national healthcare system in France, as well as your personal situation and choices.

For non-EU students studying in France, the primary visa categories are:

  • Schengen Visa

Covering stays less than 90 days, Schengen visas require insurance coverage valid in France of at least €37,500. If you would like more information about this Schengen Visa and its insurance requirements please visit our Schengen Visa Insurance page for more information and advice.

  • Long Stay Student Visa over 28 years old

For students who are over 28 years of age, and planning on staying longer than 90 days. You will be required to show proof of private health insurance valid in France as part of the visa application.

  • Long Stay Student Visa under 28 years old

For students under the age of 28 years of age, and who are planning to stay in France for more than 90 days, you may be eligible for the social healthcare system in France, depending on which school they attend, and if eligible, 70% of most healthcare costs will be covered. In that case, it is recommended that you purchase a supplemental insurance plan that can cover the remaining costs that are not covered by the healthcare system when you are residing in France.
