University of New Mexico recommends the Student Secure health insurance plan(s) for all scholars who will not receive insurance through their University appointment because they provide comprehensive coverage at affordable rates and they meet the J visa requirements. For paid scholars who will receive insurance from the University, these plans can also be purchased from the time of arrival in the US until the employee health insurance plan starts.
Scholars are encouraged to view the plan benefits, exclusions and frequently asked questions to familiarize themselves with how the plan(s) work and what they cover. Please follow these steps to purchase coverage:
- Read the policy information and select the plan that is best for you. Be sure you read what is covered and what is not by each plan.
- Select the Apply Online link to start the purchase process.
- Once you have purchased coverage, you will need to download your visa letter in the Student Zone to print proof of coverage.
- Scholars are responsible for having health insurance coverage for their ENTIRE stay in the U.S. You should never let your insurance policy expire as long as you remain in the U.S.
- Scholars must provide proof of coverage to the Global Education Office at the new scholar arrival orientation, so please download the visa letter in the student zone before you attend orientation.
