Schengen Visa Insurance Requirements
If you plan to travel to Europe, then you will want to be familiar with the Schengen visa and the minimum health insurance requirements needed to enter these countries. There are 26 countries that make up the Schengen area.
Schengen Visa Countries are:
Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
The Schengen areas was formed to embrace the flow of goods and people by eliminating the need of passports and immigration controls at their shared borders. This means that if you will be traveling to any of the following countries, you will need to meet their shared entrance requirements. Once you arrive, you will be able to freely travel through all of these countries without needing to go through customs again.
The Schengen Visa
The Schengen visa is common for travelers going to Europe for either business or pleasure for 90 days or less. If you – or someone you know – will be entering one of these countries under the Schengen visa, proof of sufficient medical coverage will be necessary at the time of the visa application. Medical insurance requirements for the Schengen visa are:
- Minimum coverage shall be EUR €30 000 (equivalent to $50,000 USD)
- Cover must be valid within the Schengen region and for the full duration of stay
- Cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death
Please Note: Be sure to check with your consulate or embassy about any specific health insurance minimums they have, as these minimums can vary by member state.
Many countries will require that you have a visa letter from your insurance company that reflects that your medical insurance plan does meet the above stated requirements. You will also want to ensure that this letter has your complete name (which matches your name on your passport) as well as your date of birth.
