Belgium International Student Insurance

International Student Health Insurance for Students in Belgium

Belgium is located in Central Europe, bordered by France, Germany, Holland, and Luxembourg, as well as the Atlantic Ocean. International students often find that Belgium is an excellent country to study in. Because it is a small country and geographically close to its neighbors, students can take day trips to France, the Netherlands and Germany very easily. Belgium makes for a perfect jumping off point for exploring other interesting European countries.

That is not to say that Belgium is not a fascinating place to study in its own right. Because it is one of the founding members of the European Union, as well as home to the EU, Belgium holds an extremely important seat in Western Europe. Although Belgium gained its independence from the Netherlands in 1830, it still holds close ties to both the Netherlands and France, making it a truly unique country. Different regions in the country speak French, Dutch, and German, and the capital, Brussels, is officially a bilingual city, conducting its affairs in both French and Dutch.

Belgium Insurance Requirements

If your stay studying in Belgium is longer than 90 days, you are required to obtain a student visa. Therefore, before traveling to Belgium, you will need to make sure you have applied for the correct visa - and depending on the visa you will need to show proof of valid international student insurance coverage. A Belgian Schengen Visa application requires that you show proof of minimum 30,000 € coverage within Belgium and the entire Schengen area. Additionally, if you are 21 or older, you will need to obtain an FBI background check as part of your visa application. Since this background check can take up to five months, it is recommended that you apply as early as possible before your journey.

The Belgium visa insurance requirements are:

  • Students from the EU can travel with their European Health Insurance Card which will cover them in Belgium, but are also recommended to have private medical insurance.
  • Students from outside the EU travelling for less than 90 days will have to apply for the Schengen Visa and thus will need to meet Schengen insurance requirements.
  • Students from outside the EU travelling for more than 90 days will need to apply for a national long-stay visa (D visa), and that application requires showing proof of health insurance coverage that covers hospital and medical costs during their time in Belgium.

Students who need to purchase private international student insurance coverage for their time in Belgium, can purchase one of the plans below that will meet all requirements - and you can apply online quickly and easily!
