Netherlands Visa Insurance Requirements

Learn about the visa insurance requirements for the Netherlands

Depending on your nationality, Netherlands visa insurance requirements will differ. The rules and regulations for international students are detailed in the Aliens Law. Dutch insurance for international students is a requirement for most situations. Though information on certain circumstances will be detailed below, international students are encouraged to research their individual conditions. No Visa Required

If an international student plans to stay in the Netherlands for a time period of three months or shorter and is from one of the following countries, he is not required to obtain a visa.

Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany (Federal Republic), Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, (FYR) Macedonia, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, St Kitts and Nevis, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America, Uruguay, Vatican City, Venezuela.

Visa Required

International students who plan to stay in the Netherlands for a time period of three months or shorter but are from one of the following countries not listed above are required to obtain a visa.
If an international student is planning to study in the Netherlands for longer than three months, he must acquire a visa. Netherlands visa insurance requirements will also vary depending on the purpose of your stay.

Visa for a temporary stay - This visa is required in most cases if the international student is planning to stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of three months.
Provisional Residence Permit (MVV) - If the international student wants to stay for more than three months with a valid residence permit.
Return visa - If the student wishes to re-enter the Netherlands and does not have a valid residence permit.

These rules do not apply for EU/EEA nationals and their family members.

Insurance Requirements

Insurance requirements for the Netherlands state that all international students are required to have health insurance for medical expenses. Dutch insurance for international students depend on the student’s personal situation. On some terms, private insurance or insurance from a home country in the European Union will suffice. Since a form of medical insurance is required, Dutch insurance for international students will consist of Dutch public healthcare insurance, an EU Health insurance Card, or private insurance.

Non-EU/EEA residents staying for longer than three months are required to apply for a resident permit and have an alternative form of insurance while the permit is being processed. After the permit is issued, the student must take out Dutch public health insurance or special insurance policies available for international students.
International students studying in the Netherlands under the age of 30 do not need to take out Dutch public health insurance.
Students who have an EU Health Insurance Card can continue to be covered by their insurance policy in their home country.

International students hired for a job or internship while studying in the Netherlands will be required to take out Dutch public healthcare insurance. According to insurance requirements for the Netherlands, private insurance is only authorized to international students who are in the Netherlands for “study purposes only” which means they will not take on part-time employment alongside their studies.

Although visa applications will usually be processed within two weeks, it is recommended that international students begin the process early, even as early as three months before entering the Netherlands.
